Northern Nigeria’s emirates are being divided
The northern Nigeria emirates are likely to become a competition between regional governors.
By 2024, several states have included the reform of their emirates in their agendas.
Recently, the Adamawa state government has introduced a system of succession among the state emirates, which means that the position will rotate among the first-ranking state emirs.
In Sokoto, the state assembly has amended the state emirates law, reducing the Sultan of Sokoto’s power to appoint district governors and governors.
In Katsina, the state assembly has also approved the creation of eight governors in Katsina and Daura emirates.
